From Mrs Kathleen Bell in Manchester:
I was born in Blackrod and spent a lot of my time walking around Rivington especially Rivington Pike. I also went to dances at Rivington Barn and held my wedding reception there. I was appalled that Go Ape had been given planning permission and even more appalled when I discovered they had been given the planning permission unfairly. Heads should roll because of this decision. I emailed Lindsay Hoyle the MP for Chorley but I didn’t receive a reply, as far as I am concerned it is very bad manners of Mr Hoyle not to reply, even an acknowledgement would have been something.
I don’t agree with this Go Ape experience because trees get damaged, birds and bats will lose their habitat. There are also wild animals that will be distressed by the building of this theme park. I am amazed that Go Ape was allowed to go ahead in the Lake District. Is nothing sacred? Have we not got enough theme parks up and down the length and breadth of the UK without more being built. My sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Mick Thomasson live in Adlington and spend a lot of time in Rivington walking their dog and visiting both the Great Barn and the Hall BarnĀ and they are helping theĀ fight to overturn the decision to build Go Ape. I don’t live in the area, but I am offering my support in the fight.
Mrs Ball
I have not received your e-mail regarding Go Ape. As I have stated in my reply to an earlier thread, I am aware of the concerns residents have and I am taking action to assist.
If you would like to call my office on 01257 271 555 I would be happy to discuss Go Ape and the action I and my office has taken.
Regards
Lindsay Hoyle MP
I do believe that Ruth Kelly and Lindsay Hoyle will be at Great House Barn Rivington 10.30 tomorrow Friday.
this has not been published before on this website WHY!!
We only found out yesterday.
It was the request of Ruth Kelly’s office that it will not be a public meeting, she wants to come down to listen to our views and look at the site,so that she will have a better idea regarding our concerns.
Lindsay Hoyles office will be present because it is in the Borough of Chorley.
I think we should respect that wish, and see what transpires.
Both parties have contacted the House of Commons regarding the 1902 Act,and are awaiting a reply.
I’ll keep you posted regarding developements.
Thank you for that Bob. I was a little concerned that nothing about the meet was on the website.
get a life, things move on , these areas are no longer just for walkers, people want to do diferent things on the hills and forrests, you never hear of the the mountain bikers or runners etc complaining about new things going on, also how much money and jobs are brought in from mountain bikers, runners and the people who will use go ape.
as for the go ape in the lakes, in reports they show very little damage to the surrounding area.
does mrs bell drive to rivington??? bet you didnt complain about the car park been made bigger?????? think of the damage the cars do.
thanks
Steve
There are 18 Go-Apes up and down the country and more are planned so you have plenty of opportunity to monkey about.
There is only I Lever Park. It needs to be preserved!

i under stand that there are more places to go on go ape, i am from preston and use rivington for walking, running, mountain biking and road cycling so i get my use out of the place, while i am there i eat at the cafe and visit the barn etc, more people means more money and i am sure people would love to see the gardens put back to how they once where, that will cost money.
dont get me wrong i am not for getting rid of the trees and the like, but people now use outside areas for different things, yes you can go to other places to use go ape, ride mountain bikes, but people can also go to other places to walk there dogs.
but i am from the local area and love rivington, so why should i go somewhere else????
plus, once the work on go ape has been done, and the trees have grown more, from the ground i bet you could walk past without seeing most of it.
thats what i think and am looking forward to a new rivington with new activities.
Steve
Don’t know what proportion walking is, of your activities around Rivington, but as you run, mountainbike and cycle around the area in question, i’ve little doubt that in time you won’t notice it. But make no mistake, as you amble along the bridleway or lakeside path adjacent to the activity after next Easter, 7 DAYS A WEEK, 8am till late, you will be hard pressed not to notice up to 50 people swinging and shouting across the full 7 acre site. We who oppose this development are not ‘killjoys’ or indeed nimbys’, we want everyone to have the right to enjoy this beautiful area as it is, as it was meant to be, for free, and not have United Utilities embark on a program of illegal force fed changes that will alter the face of Lever Park forever. Believe me my friend, what you take for granted now, you will be paying for, sometime in the future.
